Applications for multiturn rotary encoders
Mobile cranes are designed to place loads precisely in virtually any chosen position.
Their nimble movements are the result of seamless interaction between numerous sensors and actuators and the intelligent control electronics.
The system has to move within a permitted, uncritical working range to prevent tipping, for example. To achieve this, factors such as the angle of rotation, tilt and extension of the telescopic arm are continuously recorded, and this requires high-precision rotary encoders. Recording the extension of the telescopic arm safely and precisely presents a particular challenge.
For tasks such as this, multiturn rotary encoders are used. In addition to the single turn position of the encoder, they record the number of turns made.
Solutions such as this are required in many other applications besides the one mentioned here, such as in drilling systems for open cast and underground mining where the tunneling (displacement) of the boring equipment is precisely measured, or in high-stacker forklifts and heavy-load transporters where wheel positions need to be recorded with high precision. Multiturn rotary encoders are also invaluable in conjunction with packaging machines, cable winch applications and cable drums.
Vert-X 37MT – absolute measuring system without batteries or gears
Up until now, multiturn rotary encoders have had a significant drawback: they must be equipped with a reduction gear or a backup battery in order to detect, store and retain information on the number of turns when in an unpowered state.
This is not the case with Contelec’s multiturn rotary encoders. Their measuring system is based on measurement of the magnetic field direction to detect the single turn position, together with magnetic measurement of the number of turns. The shaft rotation generates sufficient electrical energy to reliably increment or decrement the turn count in the non-volatile memory even without external power. The result is an absolute measuring system that does not lose track of absolute position in the absence of supply voltage.
Rotary encoder with innovative architecture
Notable features include the high resolution with which Contelec’s absolute multiturn technology is specified. For the single turn position, this is 16 bit, equivalent to over 65,000 steps per turn. Resolutions of up to 44 bit can be realized in the multiturn area. In the default configuration of the Vert-X 37MT, both the single turn and multiturn resolution are limited to 16 bit.
The innovative architecture of Contelec’s Vert-X 37MT rotary encoder offers distinct advantages for the relevant applications. Dispensing with a backup battery reduces maintenance costs, increases the lifespan and benefits the environment. The Vert-X 37MT rotary encoders are also extremely robust, reducing maintenance requirements and minimizing the risk of failure.
